A convicted murderer who slipped through a Tennessee prison fence last month was apprehended in Missouri after an eight-day manhunt that stretched across three states, ending when authorities discovered him with stolen firearms and a stolen truck.
Cross-Country Chase Ends in Missouri
Jacob Morley, 28, was arrested near Norborne, Missouri on November 4th after authorities tracked him through multiple states using camera footage. Missouri State Highway Patrol officers took him into custody around 11:30 a.m., recovering three stolen firearms from the truck he was driving. The arrest came after a tip led investigators to a hunting camp shed in Marion, Illinois, where Morley had been hiding approximately 320 miles south of Chicago.
Morley was serving a life sentence at Northwest Correctional Complex in Tiptonville, Tennessee when correctional officers discovered him missing on October 25th. Security footage later revealed he escaped by breaching a perimeter fence while still wearing his prison uniform. Within hours, he had stolen a white 2008 Ford F-350 truck from Lake County, Tennessee.
Violent Criminal History
Morley received his life sentence in 2022 for murdering his former coworker, Cody Birchfield. Authorities found Birchfield’s body concealed in a box beneath Morley’s home in Carter County, Tennessee after the victim had been missing for several weeks. When deputies arrived at his home during the initial investigation, Morley fled, triggering a manhunt that eventually ended in North Carolina.
His convictions included first-degree murder, aggravated burglary, tampering with evidence, vandalism, and evading arrest. The escape and subsequent capture marked the second time Morley forced law enforcement into a multi-state pursuit. Combined rewards from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the governor’s office, and U.S. Marshals reached $17,500 for information leading to his arrest.
Prison Facility Under Scrutiny
The facility Morley escaped from faces serious questions about security and management. A grand jury returned dozens of indictments in July related to five inmate murders, staff assaults, and other violent incidents at Northwest Correctional Complex. Tennessee’s Inmate Disciplinary Oversight Board recently discussed ongoing problems at the prison, with members suggesting leadership failures contributed to the facility’s violence and security issues.
Authorities have not disclosed specific details about how Morley managed to breach the fence or evade detection during his escape. Officials promised to release more information as the investigation continues. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation thanked the public for tips and vigilance during the weeklong search.
