At least nine people were killed and 34 wounded when gunmen opened fire on worshippers outside a Christian church in Jordan, prompting the nation’s king to order security forces to respond with an iron fist against those responsible for what officials are calling an act of blind extremism.
Attack Targets Church Funeral Service
Surveillance footage verified by ABC News shows at least three armed attackers arriving at St. George Greek Orthodox Church in the village of Hammoud, located in Karak governorate, before opening fire on mourners. The shooting erupted while a funeral service was still underway, with victims gathered in the church courtyard. Eyewitnesses reported a fourth individual served as the driver for the assault team, according to Jordanian officials investigating the Friday attack.
Dirgham Al-Halasah, who witnessed the attack firsthand, described the village as a community known for harmony and positive relationships among residents. He stated the assault brought great pain and was completely unexpected for the area. As of Saturday, 22 victims remained hospitalized in stable condition, according to Jordanian Health Minister Ibrahim Bdour. Security agencies continue hunting for the perpetrators while the investigation remains active.
National Leadership Responds With Force
King Abdullah II of Jordan declared the security and safety of Jordanians a red line during a National Security Council meeting held Saturday. The monarch ordered security forces to show no leniency in protecting citizens’ lives and demanded the harshest penalties for those behind what he characterized as a terrorist act targeting Karak. Prime Minister Jafar Hassan attributed the violence to blind extremism, while Queen Rania described the crime against worshippers as heinous and devastating to the entire nation.
The Council of Church Heads in Jordan condemned the assault, emphasizing that the brotherhood uniting Muslims and Christians in Jordan represents shared history and genuine partnership in building the nation. The religious leaders insisted this bond would remain stronger than any attempt to create discord or division within Jordanian society.
International Security Response
The United States Embassy in Jordan issued a security alert stating it is closely monitoring the terror attack that occurred October 23. American officials announced increased security measures and advised U.S. citizens to exercise caution while monitoring Jordanian authorities for breaking developments. The embassy’s response reflects growing concerns about security threats targeting religious communities in the region, particularly attacks on Christian worshippers during religious gatherings and services.
